MDRS Mobile Design:
Modernization for Data and Workflows

Timeline

2024

Project Goal

For a leading automotive manufacturer, I redesigned the Manufacturing Data Reporting System (MDRS), a legacy Windows desktop application that relied on paper check sheets and delayed data entry. The goal was to make MDRS mobile-first, eliminate paper workflows, and streamline checks to reduce cost, increase accuracy, and improve efficiency at scale.

User Goal

Operators needed to perform checks directly on the floor in real time, scan equipment/VINs to load tasks instantly, and receive automated notifications through a fast, intuitive mobile interface.

Solution & Impact

I led the design of MDRS Mobile, introducing direct data entry, scan-to-load checklists, and real-time notifications. The redesign eliminated $127K annually in paper costs, unlocked $2.3M in efficiency gains, and aligned data capture with the actual time checks were performed. Operators gained instant access to critical information, reducing errors and improving operational responsiveness.

My Role

End-to-end design lead for the client engagement. Applied UX strategy to untangle legacy database and technical limitations, creating solutions valued by both users and the business. Captured floor workflows and translated complex business logic into mobile experiences. Defined IA and user flows, designed and prototyped complete journeys, and directed interaction and visual design. Collobrated with developers, analysts, and client stakeholders to align technical feasibility with user and business requirements.
